“British Parliamentary Debate” at PCTE

Hindustan Times

The Tribune

Did you go to school and college, where when you had a debate, the faculty member gave you a topic and said, “You are speaking FOR or AGAINST”. So, you went home collected data, wrote a perfect speech and went in on the destined date and basically delivered a speech in a declamation of sorts, where nothing was really argued or discussed, and you thought that that was Debate???

Well, that era is over. PCTE Group of Institute is into fifth year of holding what is typical called “British Parliamentary Debate”, and is practiced in most developed nations across the globe, including US, Europe and Australia as the common debating pattern and championships.

Harpreet K Kang, Deputy Dean, PCTE Group of Institutes, who introduced this event in the city to PCTE and several schools across the city, said, “This year, 35 teams from outside Ludhiana are coming to compete in one of the most stiff competitions at PCTE, which is carrying out this activity in collaboration with Ludhiana Management Association, now coined as, “Dr. D R Memorial British Parliamentary Debate”.  She told that the there was a lot of excitement in the campus and the students were geared for Season III. Ms. Kang added that best of teams from NIRMA, Ahmedabad, FMS, Banaras Hindu University, National Law University, Lucknow, Welingkar, Mumbai, and many others were going to fight it out in the next three days. She said it was a knock out league debate which will go on from 16th to 18thFebruary.

PCTE students do not compete in the event butorganize, and help in adjudication. Dr. K N S Kang, Vice President, LMA and Director General, PCTE Group of Institutes added that the debate had set an entirely new culture in how students think, because they have to be well read enough, and be able to think of their feet in order to win the debate. She said no more the old system of learning prepared speeches can last the students in todays era, where they have to be street smart to either do a job or initiate a business.

Shruti Sharma, A faculty member at PCTE, and the event coordinator said it is amazing to notice how people use to ask, “What is a British Parliamentary Debate?” when we called up any of the colleges pan-India 5 years back, and calls usually were more of an awareness campaign, but today, PCTE has been able to spread this culture not only to the city, but also to India at large, because we get a better response to our efforts with each passing year.

Students of PCTE Group of Institutes, Ludhiana prepared and enacted in a play – “Main fir Aawanga” on 2nd Feb 2012. This is a socio-political play based on a hypothetical situation which contemplates how Shaheed Bhagat Singh would take to the present world if he was to be born again. The play very well knit and written by noted writer, Palli Bhupinder.

Dr. K N S Kang, Director General, PCTE Group of Institutes, informed, “The theme of this play is an awakening on social and political evils prevailing in the present times in our country. We are still under the clutches of exploitation of women, corruption from politicians. It’s a self wakening expression of the mute public that is bearing atrocities of the hands of so called Netas.”

Ms. Kawinder Kalsi, faculty of French at PCTE Group of Institutes, resident of BRS Nagar, visualises the whole experience as a real eye opener and very much relevant in the present time. The theme patriotism in the relevant social and political aspects was wonderfully portrayed by the writer Palli Bhupinder.  Ms. Kawinder Kalsi remarked that I had real fun and am fascinated by the dedication, devotion and total commitment of the students towards dramatics and theatre. This is a step in the right direction by the students of PCTE.

Harvard Professor interacts with PCTE students

Times Of India

Hindustan Times

If you are sitting in the Industrial city of Ludhiana, and want to expand, the next market to capture is Africa. He said the next emerging market is basically Africa, along side an about to be saturated market in Asia in about 20 odd years. This was the tip off by Harvard Professor, Dr. Nicholas Nugent Sr., while teaching a course on International Marketing at PCTE Group of Institutes, Ludhiana on Tuesday.

He also told the students, “Don’t forget basically India has been a trading country in the past – remember between India and China, they use to control 70% of the world trade. What has happened is that Indians have got bogged down with the production concept somewhere, and they need to move on and focus on trade again.”

“Marketing effectiveness, strategic orientations, Political and Legal Issues in Internationals markets are the key Issues for Global companies,” said Dr. Nugent. Continuing fun with learning, he stressed upon some of the specific aspects of International Business.  He said that ,Strong Strategic orientation, better understanding of Political environment, Going Green with the product and operations, Implications of various international legislations, Tariff and Non tariff barriers are important issue which need to be addressed by Global companies to remain competitive.

Dr. Nugent said that while doing International business companies need to be consistent and plan for long term.  He said that it’s not the seller who dictates the business for the companies but it’s the buyers who run it so the companies need to have customer centric strategies rather that company oriented.

Nugent further highlighted that if the companies need to be effective in global markets they should negotiate settlements among themselves rather than indulge in Legal issue. He said that legal solutions are often expensive, require lot of time and expose the company in front of the world. In such a situation companies loose the opportunities of gaining advantage in the market.

Dr. Nugent further stressed that on going green with not only products but also with the operations of the company. Today’s world is more environmental oriented so being environmental friendly is one important criterion for the company to go global. He also highlighted the importance of Tariffs and non Tariff barriers and how to use them in competitive environment.

Dr. K.N.S.Kang, Director General, PCTE group of Institutes appreciated the enthusiasm and energy brought into the classroom by Dr. Nugent and said that students will definitely learn from the experience and practical exposure. He further said that today business is getting global, and every second company is either doing exports or operates in International markets. In such a scenario it is very important for young management professional to learn the strategies of doing business and understand the dynamics of Global businesses.

January marks the beginning of festival season in India and Lohri is the first festival celebrated this month. Lohri is a very popular festival in Punjab. The history of  Lohri, a seasonal festival of North India is as old as that of story of Indus Valley civilization itself. The Festival of Lohri marks the beginning of the end of winter and the coming of spring and the new year. RAWAR

Get to think of it….Hotel Management College has labs where students cook.Pharma students work in labs and see real results of chemicals and mixtures.Medical students go and work on real patients in hospitals for years before they begin practicing ….

IT students have the computer in the lab both for software and hardware practice through out the 3 years degree.

But when it comes to Management students, there is no real endeavor in giving these students first hand in the field learning before they become Executives or Managers, and for some even Entrepreneurs. Henceforth, for the last dozen years PCTE team has been pained to see its students suffering, while in the same breath it has pained to find ways to provide the right platform for students.

Finally this year, which happens to the final year for the founder batch of PGDM students, an Autonomous course started by PCTE under AICTE, Ministry of HRD.  Though PCTE has run a conventional MBA for dozen years now, it did not provide the leverage to practice such real life courses, which could evolve students for the job ahead.

PCTE has finally launched a program – RAWAR, which would enable the students to be empowered both inside and outside the classroom, and not merely understand concepts as theory, but be able to apply them long before they even get into the marker/field.

PGDM 75 students were divided into teams of approx. 6 students each, and the teams had to fight out the other team in a stipulated time (usually 3-4 days or a week long), where in they are given different tasks each week:

Week One: The students had to buy products for PCTE itself. Two teams got quotations for IT accessories after searching the market, visiting dealers and getting the best offers for a list of products handed out to them. The team, which got best offer was given to execute the order. Similarly, two other teams fought out on buying stationery, another two teams for buying office chairs, and yet two teams bought floor tiles.

Week Two: The students indulged in Product Development. Each student was given a sample of Merchandise like PCTE key ring, coffee mug, calendar, file cover, etc. Teams were judged on basis of better designing and quotation, besides quality.

Week Three: Was a social week for PCTEians. Teams went out to collect woolen clothes, shoes, bedding, quilts, stationery and toys. They will be judged on who collected more, and later the same teams would go along with teachers to slums they visited last month for another activity and distribute the collections in each slums.

Today, was the concluding day of Week Three, where at Campus 2, PCTE B-School about in the morning around 40 students after 4 days of day and night work got 7 trucks full of woolen clothes, bedding, quilts, blankets, shoes, stationery and toys for the poor in the city. It was a collection unlike any other seen for such an activity in the city before.

Dr. K N S Kang, Director General, PCTE overjoyed by the students work gave all the eight teams involved in it a walk over and said, “No student shall be eliminated for poor work when the students have put up such a grand show.” The students were extremely elated. Except the day did not end here.

All the PCTE B School students then got onto segregating all clothes and shoes into categories as Men, women, and children. Loaded them into three PCTE Buses and went to three major slums of the city. HarleenMahajan, the Course Incharge for Project Management explained that areas were defined as Industrial Area, DhandariKalan, and Chandigarh Road. She said that this definition evolved after consulting different NGOs in the city and learning that while there were plenty of NGOs focusing on slums inside the city, there was not enough to cater to the ones on the outskirts.

AshimaThapar, another Faculty Manager informed that many organizations generously helped the students through out this week towards this noble cause. Pumpkins and Fun Club donated Toys, DMC Hostel gave away stationery, Sharman Shawls gave a cheque of Rs.11,000. Deutsche Bank gave clothes and stationery. Freemansonary, Asha Textiles, Dua textiles, Bunty Fabrics, Punjab Heavy Factory gave away over two hundred blankets.

Dr. Kang explained that RAWAR is a seven week long exercise and will continue with similar competitions, which get tougher and tougher in the next 4-5 weeks till the end of the Trimester of Final PCTE B-School students. He said, “Beyond a doubt, if anything has helped the students grow over night and get to the basics of the market, it was RAWAR.”

First Ever B-School Exercise in India – RAWAR.

Times Of India

Times Of India

Rawar is a seven week long exercise that PCTE B-School took off here at Ludhiana today with its final year PGDM students (Post Graduate Diploma In Management). It is the first of the kind in the country, where the students are divided into teams. The teams are out to purchase, sell, negotiate, lead, team play, handle key situations, etc .

Ms. Harpreet K Kang, Deputy Dean, PCTE Group explained that she came up with the concept to address a huge gap in Management education in the country. She elaborated that while most vocational courses have practical training alongside studies, like during MBBS a student gets to treat patients, or a Hotel  Management student actually gets to cook in the kitchen and do house-keeping, but a Management graduate despite playing a key role in the economy of the country doesn’t have any sort of practical training. Henceforth, PCTE has taken this initiative where students are practically asked to purchase, sell, market, negotiate for real commodities for college and other organizations outside.

Ms. Aashima Thapar and Ms. Harleen Mahajan, the Course Instructors  for “Project Management” felt that this was one course, which would help students display everything they had learnt in over a year in theory to apply it practically. Dr. K N S Kang, Director General, PCTE Group of Institutes expatiated that while he was a Ph.D in Marketing, it was impossible to study marketing in a class alone, and PCTE will create history in Management world by first time taking management practices to the field, and grading students based on it.

For the first week, the students have been handed out a purchase order list today, informed Ms. Aashima Thapar. She said students would be purchasing in teams, and these would be real orders that they would execute for the college itself. She explained that PCTE chose to keep its in-house purchasing on the cards foremost so that the basic teething problems are not required to be resolved by the industry or market outside.

Dr. Kang informed that different banks, financial institutions, cafes, bakeries, insurance companies, restaurants, social governance, non-government organizations, schools, besides general stores and shops have been approached and contacted for this exercise alone. She elaborated that many of them have shown extreme enthusiasm for this exercise and  have collaborated in this exercise. He said students have never been this enthusiastic about any other activity  at PCTE so far, so his entire team is also pretty geared up now for the grand two odd months that will unpack from here.

PCTE organized Ek Shaam Jagjit Singh Ke Naam

Times Of India

Hindustan Times

In the rememberance of Jagjit Singh an event was organized by PCTE Group of Institutes on 15th October. Jagjit Singh (8 February 1941 – 10 October 2011) was a prominent Indian singer, composer, music director, activist and entrepreneur. Known as “The Ghazal King”, he gained acclaim together with his wife, Chitra Singh .They were the first successful husband-wife duo act in the history of recorded Indian music. Together, they are considered to be the pioneers of modern Ghazal singing and regarded as most successful recording artistes outside the realms of Indian film music.

Jagjit Singh voiced his concerns over politicisation of arts and culture in India. He also lamented about the lack of support experienced by the practitioners of India’s traditional art forms, particularly folk artists and musicians.

The ghazals like Chittin Na Koi Sandes, Hosh Waloun Ko Khabar Kiya, Hontoun Say Chou Lou Tum, Woh Kaghaz Ki Kashti, Woh Kaghaz Ki Kashti, Koi Fariyaad, Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahy Ho, Jaane Woh Kaisy Loug Thay Jinko were sung by the students and the faculty members of the PCTE College. Dr.K.N.S Kang Director General PCTE Group of Institutes said“Jagjit Singh made ghazals a household name. He simplified the otherwise elite form of singing and made it understandable for a common man. He added “Singh might not be in this world in his physical form today, but he will always be present in our lives in the form of his ghazals and music. His ghazals were simplistic yet profound. His contribution to the spread of indian music in the form of ghazals and bhajans (devotional songs) cannot be forgotten.”

Student from the college said that the ghazal maestro’s absence will be felt by the music fraternity and millions of his fans.
